Metamorphosis

No doubt it's a bit cliche for me as a trans woman, to liken my transition to that of a caterpillar into a butterfly.  No doubt it's been done countless times before, in countless ways.  Nonetheless, here is my contribution and homage in verse form, to the humble butterfly and all changelings, including myself...

Metamorphosis

By Madeline Dintzner

I'm learning just now,
How to walk and how to talk,
How to live and how to be,
Beautiful in my own skin,
Even more so from within.

I'm learning just now,
How to smile when I’m low,
To embrace my inner glow,
And let it radiate like heat,
From my head down to my feet.

I'm learning just now,
All of these things:
Patience, kindness, how to sing,
Humility and human grace,
Acceptance, strength, and inner peace.

I'm learning just now,
To spread my wings,
And find the courage,
To make the leap,

And let my soul fly free.

It's hardly Tennyson or Keats, I know, but it's genuine and from the heart.  As a child, I used to enjoy writing little poems, and during my senior year of college I took a creative writing/poetry seminar that I absolutely loved.  Lately I've felt a reawakening of creativity, especially with words, and have been feeling much more introspective, as well.  Maybe it's the hormones or maybe it's just me just getting back to me, before I learned to survive in a world in which I never quite fit.  Whatever it is, it's a good thing and I'm going to run with and see where it takes me.
